Here is another watercolor attempt of another resident, who is named Howard. I like this one a lot more than some other attempts in watercolor but I feel like it is "wonky" if that makes sense. I did a solid drawing but the lines got softer and more wiggly with the watercolor. Is that just the nature of watercolor? And I never know what to do in the background.

Backgrounds are annoying. :) However, one thing I would be careful of is keeping the temperature of the lighting consistent. The figure looks as if it's light by a cool-white light, while the background is glowing warm-yellow. (P.S., is that dark area to the right of his face a shadow? If so, I feel like it should be a slightly different color...)
I suppose the figure might look a bit wonky, but I like it...looks more like a stylistic decision than a mistake. If you're looking for more crisp lines, I'd try letting the paint you've applied dry before adding more brush work. Right now, it looks like you're mainly working wet-into-wet. For more specific advice, I'd ask Brandt...he's possibly the master at such things. :)
it has a lot of character, i like this portrait because it is wonky. if u want any more useless info let me know
One more thing. The neck area kind of bothers me. I think that cool-spot is too light in value...like the color though. The shirt's reflecting off it, yes?
i only have minimal experience with watercolors as well, but definitely letting things dry between layers will help.
i love the caricature of this piece, real personality.
i completely agree with Alyssa to be mindful of your shadow spaces.
the saturated yellow to the right of his head is having a weird ghosting effect so it's hard to tell what it is supposed to be.
the modeling of the face is overall really good, but the space under the chin is really weak; it's not dark enough and the deep red is having a striping effect that is out of place.
also, you can pick color back up off the paper by using just water on the brush. you just need to wipe it off the brush as it picks it up.
