Michelle's new work
Sorry the top image is not the best, but it's still a work in progress. So this is my new series that I am working on that is incorporating my two favorite things: figure painting and collage! Many of you have already seen these and provided critique, but I haven't made a post in a while, so here we go. I have started this series based on a lot of formal elements, but I have absolutely no idea what the theme or concept is. So if anyone wants to try to interpret my subconscious for me, and tell me what they think these are all about, please do! I would like to have a loose theme or concept in mind that I can tie this series together with. Next, I haven't painted for over a year now, so some critique on the painting would be good for future works. That's all.

I've recently decided that I don't like the background of the top image. And I probably won't do a tree. I don't know what to do, so I will probably set it aside and work on something new. Any suggestions?
With the way you've painted the figure, would try running your brush perpendicular to the flow of the arm, following the curved contour of the shape. Right now, the brushwork goes from elbow to hand in one smooth line. I think if follow circular cross sections, it would make the shape pop out as more 3-d. Does that make sense?
Love the collage idea. It's awesome! How do you finish it off? Do you gloss over it with some sort of medium? What you're doing really reminds me of Namon Bill's work (usu alumni). Here's his blog: http://namonbillsart.blogspot.com/. He has a really interesting process of applying collage with medium, then sanding it down (electric sander), and then applying more layers of collage. Repeat. Gives is a really interesting, multi-layer-deep look.
P.S. I don't know if you've figured out a theme already, but these three strike me as a sort of self-discovery sort of thing.

Thanks, Alyssa. That makes sense about the cross-contour brush strokes. And I know namon's artwork. I think he has been using an encaustic or wax lately, which is also cool but I have no idea how to do it.
And I like your suggestion about the theme.
You've for sure taken these to the HNL (hole 'nother level). It seems like now there's a reason for all the elements to work together; they're more focused. And I think the reason is that they are much more personal, more intimate. Like these are explorative profiles of an individual. Alyssa's self-discovery idea is on target, I think.
Technically speaking, I still think a stronger value punch would bring these things out, like really darkening all of the drapery around Elise save for the right side. and same with the middle.
Yeah, for now, the tree isn't jiving spatially. It does not come across as an element of the environment. But it's too early to tell.
