One thing I think would really help create more depth is change in the edges and marks. Soften the strokes in the background and keep the close marks stiffer and bulkier. I think the middle and bottom paintings of this top group feel the most successful. Also the top piece of the second group.
A second thing is some of your shadows have very hard edges which are generally softer than the thing that casts them.
Like Brandt, I would like to see more variation in the brushwork. Vary the size of the brush according to depth. I also think the little square marks sometimes look a little too geometric, especially when they are horizontal and vertical. They look better when they are going in several different directions. Have you ever tried using a filbert? They are still flat so you can create those broad brush marks, but the rounded edges might help with the geometry.
Btw, way to go! I haven't seen most of these and they are freakin awesome!!!
vince these look sweet! i'm a little jealous of some of them. i love the first one in the bottom group. you did a good job with your values. they kind of remind me of one of my friends down south - http://www.aaronbushnell.com/ he hasn't updated his website in awhile, but i really like his work, and he's come a long way in the last few years. And I’ve learned a lot from him, and from looking at his work. i really like the places you brought the negative space back into the painting, like the places where you added sky color back in, or highlights back into the darks. part of what i like so much in the first one in the bottom group is i like where your under painting is showing through, and where it looks like you brought your under painting color back on top of your opaque’s. the subtitle contrast change as it recedes looks so great! i love the dark part in the front left, next to the under painting on the right, there are some really smart marks in there. and in this one your shadow shape has really soft edges, and a good transition. i think some of these other paintings could use more contrast of marks, size of marks, and contrast of soft/hard edges. (which is something I’m trying to remind myself too) great work.
