Trying to pick up some traction and keep this project moving. Here's another little guy 6x8inches. I have one more of this size then a bunch of 8x10in panels then I'll do some larger pieces.  Let me know what you think. This is tentatively done unless someone helps me see something now or I find something I want to change after being away from it for a while. I hope the image is good enough it's just from my cell phone.

Brandt,

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: thicker paint, bolder marks.

You have values and temperatures down pretty well. What I would really like to see is some juiciness. Some risk taking on your marks. I think it would be the next step in taking your paintings to the HNL.

We've talked about this before, but what I think you should do to break the ceiling is some palette knife paintings, not so much for the product, but for the practice of being bolder with the way you lay down paint. I think this would translate well back to your "finished" paintings.

Keep 'em comin

I'll try to make that happen. I think recently I've been conscious of it but working so small has made some of that more difficult. I think I have a couple pieces in mind that would lend to trying this out. I think the piece of Scotty's Grandparents home I achieved a little of this in the trees behind the house and to the sides. Bigger brushes may help me too.

I agree with Tyler. Try and achieve a more "painterly" style. I also think your edges are very crisp and some more variety in edges could add some interest.

I too, need to try to get painterly. I think we've been working so hard for accuracy up until now, and now that we've gotten pretty good at that, we need to figure out how to make it look loose like Schmidt's stuff. We shouldn't be afraid to totally fuck up the painting and then bring it back into focus.

You're right Michelle. I think that's part of the issue. Working hard to learn to draw well first and now trying to develop a stronger style. I'm trying some new techniques on the pieces I'm working on now. I guess we'll see how much I can let go! That will be the challenge to overcome in the next stage of learning to paint stronger pieces and competing against you talented schmucks! Thanks for making me want to try harder to keep up!
