oil sketch

So I painted up this thing tonight, based on some tweaks Geoff suggested. I used cerulean blue, burnt sienna and white, for a warm/cool effect. I thought it was interesting the mixture of the two had a green tinge - wouldn't violet be more towards the mark?

Anyway, this is gessoed butcher paper, about 10 x 18 or so. I have five more for other studies. So far, I'm digging where this is going.

When Scott Foster assigned a warm/cool pallet, he used pthalo blue and burnt sienna, but pthalo is kinda greenish too, so I'm not sure if that helps you. But the greenish tinge doesn't bother me and it makes it kind of swampy. This is really beautiful. My only complaint about this painting is the underwater part. I like the brushstrokes, but the contrast created by the lack of detail and structure compared to the rest of the image is too much, especially because the two areas are separated by a line. I think the underwater part is handled just a little too loosely.

i like the whole thing. and i think the colors are awesome. i love the top. the subtleties are really great. this works really well for you.
i think you could maybe soften some brush strokes a TINY bit in places by dry brushing over the top just a little, then putting a few really confident marks on top in a few places (like you did with the broken line in the river right under the rock/tree - i love that part)
it's looking really great!
